LETTER FROM THE EDUCATION DIRECTOR

This year marks Lincoln County Cowboy Symposium’s 30th yearly event and we are celebrating in all areas of this family friendly event. Great evening concerts and daytime musicians are just the tip of the iceberg. This year’s educational program is dedicated to the geology of Lincoln County. Lincoln County had over $4 million worth of gold, coal, iron, silver, copper and lead from 1880 to 1906. Now most of the mining income in the area is coming from magnetite and hematite mining. These materials are types of iron ore that can be used in the production of steel.

The Symposium also features a petting zoo, blacksmiths, leathercrafters, spinners, “mountain men” and representatives from the Towns of Lincoln and Fort Stanton. Friday only, the Wonders on Wheels bus will be here with the special space exhibit that includes the geology of meteorites. Come on out to explore these exhibits and demonstrations to learn more about the geology and history of the area.

This year’s contests for the children of Lincoln County are also centered around geology and mining using the mediums of coloring, drawing, poetry and story writing. Stop by the Tommy Allsup stage at 4:00 pm on Saturday to see the results of these contests.
